I am Angela Maduro from Zimbabwe, and I am 26 years old. My journey as a #UPGSustainability Leader has been transformative, deeply influencing my civic engagement and amplifying my commitment to creating a more equitable and sustainable world. It all began in 2022, when I was equipped with the tools, knowledge, and network to drive meaningful change. This program deepened my understanding of sustainability and inspired me to integrate climate action, gender equality, and social inclusion into my work.
One of the most impactful experiences was my journey to Hurricane Island in 2023, where I immersed myself in hands-on sustainability practices and collaborated with global changemakers. I got an opportunity to redraft my community action project and make it more meaningful. This experience reinforced the importance of community-driven solutions and environmental stewardship, which became central to my projects. It also created a network of partnerships, friends, and colleagues who shared and supported my vision.
Since then, I have launched several initiatives that reflect my growth as a sustainability leader. I established programs like the Recycling Hub Initiative through the Trinity Charity Foundation, which empowers marginalized adolescent boys by combining entrepreneurship with climate action. I also launched clean-up campaigns and mentorship programs to challenge toxic masculinity and reduce substance abuse, fostering healthier, more inclusive communities. Additionally, I am developing a digital app to promote gender equality and environmental sustainability, ensuring these efforts are scalable and measurable.
My journey has been further enriched by other fellowships, grants, and recognitions, including the 2022 SUSI Program, the 2024 Greenheart Exchange Ambassador Scholarship, the Citizen Journalism Award 2024, and the 2024 Raoul Wallenberg Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Research Grant. These opportunities have enabled me to expand my impact, secure resources, and build partnerships that drive systemic change.
My journey as a UPG Sustainability Leader has not only shaped my approach to civic engagement but also strengthened my resolve to drive systemic change. It has taught me that sustainability is not just about the environment; it’s about people, equity, and creating opportunities for all.
As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “Until you spread your wings, you will have no idea how much you can fly. This journey has shown me the power of spreading my wings and embracing the possibilities of creating a better world.
