How I Turned 500 Milk Cartons Into Something Beautiful

One small habit. One big ripple.

In Vietnam, two homegrown milk brands, TH True Milk and Vinamilk, are doing something quietly remarkable. Rather than letting used cartons pile up in landfills, they’ve launched take-back campaigns that transform everyday packaging into eco-friendly hangers and other useful household items. For someone like me, who cares deeply about climate change and the toll human activity takes on our planet, seeing corporations move beyond profit-first thinking feels like a genuine reason for hope. I’ve been part of this campaign for over a year now, and honestly, it’s become one of my favourite parts of my routine.

The process is beautifully simple. I collect empty milk cartons as I walk through my neighbourhood, from my workplace, and from relatives’ homes. Then I cut them open, wash and dry them, and bring them to a designated TH True Milk store. What arrives as waste leaves as something useful. It’s a small, satisfying loop.

Last year, I collected around 500 cartons. This year, I’m staying the course. By May, I had already brought 200 clean cartons to my local store, enough to receive 10 hangers made entirely from recycled materials. (It takes about 35 cartons to make one hanger, which puts the math in a whole new light.) Each hanger I hang in my wardrobe is a quiet reminder that the things we discard still hold value.

What started as a personal commitment has gradually grown into something social. I’ve encouraged friends, colleagues, and family members to join in, and some have. That ripple effect, however modest, feels meaningful.

I share this not to boast about numbers, but because I genuinely believe that sustainable living doesn’t require grand gestures. It asks only for consistency and care. Whether you’re in Hanoi, Nairobi, Jakarta, or anywhere in between, the principle is the same: your daily choices leave a mark on the world. They can be a mark worth making.

Everyone can make a difference, even through the smallest of actions.
